As with all our retreats, you just need to get yourself to the final destination, and we’ll take care of the rest—well, all the complicated stuff that is. The writing, exploring and creating… that’s up to you.

For 850 EUR/ 1120 USD, you’ll enjoy 7 nights and 8 days of Italian living, near the mystical waters of the Tiber River, in sight of The Green Mountains Martan. Step back into the past as you reside in the 16th century country house of a noble family of Todi. The property retains the charm and simplicity of a fresh summer resort just outside the tough walls. Its three apartments are ideal for a relaxing holiday but also offer access to the authentic Umbrian countryside, and the close town center.

Your stay includes a daily breakfast, plus one meal/day and lodging in a fully stocked apartment with shared amenities.

There are opportunities for day trips if desired, and as always, the retreat allows for quiet, uninterrupted writing time, and includes 5 morning workshops with our Author in Residence, Mary Morris. Mary is author of over fourteen novels, short story collections and travel memoirs. Her work has been translated into Italian, Dutch, Spanish, German, Swedish and Japanese. She’s not only a very talented woman with lots of stories to share, but also the winner of the Rome Prize. She lives in New York where she is a professor of writing at Sarah Lawrence College. 

As a Write By The Water attendee, you will also be able to submit a section of a work in progress in advance, to receive a detailed critique from Mary Morris during your one-on-one time in Italy.

Located just ten minutes from the town of Todi, Case di Torre Bertona will be your home for 7 nights. Our hostess will provide a substantial breakfast and one daily meal of typical Umbrian cuisine. You will enjoy life in one of the apartments at Torre Bertona while relaxing in the Jacuzzi room or lounging on the outdoor patio and taking in the view.
